Every hosting company seems to be green now. Some of them mean it. Others have added “eco-friendly” to their marketing copy and changed nothing else. This guide is our attempt to sort one from the other — as plainly as we can, for organisations that want their digital infrastructure to reflect their values.
The internet consumes roughly 1.5% of global electricity, and that number is growing. For purpose-driven organisations, hosting choice is one of the most meaningful environmental decisions in your digital stack — and one of the least scrutinised.

Not all credentials are equal. Here are the five tiers of evidence — from strongest to weakest — and what they actually mean.

Direct renewable energy use
The gold standard. The data centre is actually powered by solar, wind, or hydro. Ask for the energy contract or third-party verification. This is rare in Australia — most providers don't own their data centres and therefore can't make this claim honestly.

The green case here rests primarily on the architecture: static and edge-deployed sites serve pages from nodes geographically close to the visitor, reducing total data transfer and therefore reducing emissions per page load.

Organisations whose sites are built on modern static frameworks and who prioritise performance and global availability.
Pantheon / Kinsta
RecommendedBest for managed WordPress with strong infrastructure credentials
Both platforms run on Google Cloud, which has been carbon neutral since 2007 and has committed to net zero by 2030. Google Cloud's renewable energy commitments are among the most substantial and independently verified of any major cloud provider. For organisations running complex WordPress installations — particularly those with multiple integrations or high-traffic needs — these platforms offer the most credible environmental story on managed infrastructure.

Larger nonprofits and organisations running demanding WordPress sites that require managed hosting with strong uptime guarantees.
Digital Pacific
Best for Australian data residency requirements
Australian-operated with a carbon offset programme. For organisations that have specific data residency requirements — either contractually or under Privacy Act obligations — Digital Pacific's Australian-hosted infrastructure is a meaningful consideration.
